Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

The right to live together and have a say is enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. This is also known as the Disability Rights Treaty. Many countries have signed this treaty and promise to improve the rights of people with disabilities.

Germany has also signed the treaty. However, many rights still need to be implemented here. The German Institute for Human Rights is making sure that this happens.

Last year, the German government developed a plan. The plan is intended to regulate how the rights of people with disabilities are implemented. That is why many people with disabilities are helping with this. They say: Nothing about us without us. This means that no one should make decisions about them on their own. They want to have a say.

With this plan, the government wants to support people with intellectual, mental, and physical disabilities. These may be people who cannot hear or see, who cannot read or have difficulty reading, who cannot walk, or who have difficulty understanding.
